Because, in the end, no one will ever give a shit who has kept shit ‘real’ except the two or three people, sitting in their apartments, bitter and self-devouring, who take it upon themselves to wonder about such things. The keeping real of shit matters to some people, but it does not matter to me. It’s fashion, and I don’t like fashion, because fashion does not matter.
What matters is that you do good work. What matters is that you produce things that are true and will stand. What matters is that the Flaming Lips’s new album is ravishing and I’ve listened to it a thousand times already, sometimes for days on end, and it enriches me and makes me want to save people. What matters is that it will stand forever, long after any narrow-hearted curmudgeons have forgotten their appearance on goddamn 90210. What matters is not the perception, nor the fashion, not who’s up and who’s down, but what someone has done and if they meant it. What matters is that you want to see and make and do, on as grand a scale as you want, regardless of what the tiny voices of tiny people say. Do not be critics, you people, I beg you. I was a critic and I wish I could take it all back because it came from a smelly and ignorant place in me, and spoke with a voice that was all rage and envy. Do not dismiss a book until you have written one, and do not dismiss a movie until you have made one, and do not dismiss a person until you have met them. It is a fuckload of work to be open-minded and generous and understanding and forgiving and accepting, but Christ, that is what matters. What matters is saying yes.

What I did today
Awesome and Congrats! Now go buy a gun and let’s go shooting!- Woke up at 5:00 a.m.
- Took the bus and train to Embarcadero BART.
- Walked to 630 Sansome St. Arrived a little too early, so walked around the block (Federal offices open at 7 a.m., FYI).
- Went in, did the security check thing, checked in with receptionist, waited in gloomy and quiet waiting room for 30 minutes. Brandon is with me the entire time.
- Young 20-something guy called my name, and I followed him behind an “Employees Only” door, walked down a long hallway, until we arrive at his office.
- He said to remain standing and raise my right hand. He asked me to swear to tell the truth. I did.
- He went over paperwork, requested to see my identification, and asked a few basic questions like if I was or ever been a member of the Communist party. You know, basic stuff.
- Then he asked me a few questions about U.S. history and government. He followed that up by asking me to read a sentence from a piece of paper, and then he asked me to write a sentence on a piece of paper.
- He then requested any additional information. I showed him our joint tax return for the past year, joint bank statements, joint electric bill, etc. Also showed him a few photos, and a letter from a friend who attended our wedding.
- We made small talk. He asked me where it was we went for vacation in a few of the photos. What is it that Brandon does for a living. Etc.
- He took all the paperwork and went next door. Then he reappeared a few minutes later saying that I had passed the citizenship test. He handed me a piece of paper, and said to expect a notification letter in the next 30 days to tell me the date and time of the oath ceremony.
- Then I had breakfast with Brandon. Walked with him to his office. Then I walked along the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building, walked to the Metreon to watch The Men Who Stare At Goats, had a chicken and waffle lunch from Little Skillet near South Park, took the bus to Rainbow Grocery and bought some hippie groceries like soy milk powder and coconut flour, went to Humphry Slocombe for a Maple Walnut + Pumpkin 5-Spice ice cream combo, and then came home.
So you know, nothing big.Posted on November 26, 2009 via Awkward Cheese with 8 notes
